Induction Workshops to assist Traditional Council Members in executing their roles.

Following the election and constitution of 147 Traditional Councils in 2024, the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) has embarked on an initiative to equip elected Traditional Council Members with a deeper understanding of their roles as they take on their responsibilities through a series of Induction Workshops in all five districts.

The Induction Workshops for Traditional council members are guided by the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act 03 of 2019 which encourages collaboration between government and Traditional Councils in identifying specific areas and issues where support or improvement is required within rural communities.

Speaking during the first workshop attended by Traditional Council Members from across the Capricorn District, Limpopo CoGHSTA MEC, Mr Basikopo Makamu stated that the election and constitution of Traditional Councils was an important milestone in stabilising the institution of Traditional Leadership.

"Our preoccupation is to equip all Traditional Council Members who should bear in mind that their roles and responsibilities exist in terms of the Act to support their respective Senior Traditional Leaders in bringing about social and economic transformation within their communities," said Makamu.

In conclusion, MEC Makamu congratulated all attendees on their election and encouraged them to take the presentations on the Code of conduct and functions of members seriously as they would assist them in executing what they have been elected to, which is to support their Senior Traditional Leaders.
